The Alema of Warri, Chief Emmanuel Oritsejolomi Uduaghan, has distanced himself from a controversial statement attributed to him in an online publication, describing the report as false, misleading and a deliberate attempt to tarnish his reputation.
Uduaghan specifically denied having any connection to a story published by Daily Post Media in which he was allegedly quoted as making comments suggesting that Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, should focus more on kitchen duties.
In a statement issued in Abigborodo, the Warri High Chief expressed dismay over the publication, accusing the media platform of spreading misinformation and failing to adhere to the principles of responsible journalism.
He maintained that he neither granted any interview nor made any statement related to the subject matter, insisting that the report was wrongly attributed to him.
"I have so much respect for the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu. I also know her importance in the country," Uduaghan stated.
The traditional chief emphasized the need for accuracy, fairness and professionalism in media practice, noting that journalism demands proper verification and attribution before publication.
"Journalism is the practice of the art of the specific. I have no connection with that video and news story," he said.
Uduaghan further warned that he would pursue legal action over what he described as false attribution and reputational damage arising from the publication.
He called on the management of Daily Post Media to immediately withdraw the report from its platforms or update it with the correct attribution to reflect the true source of the statement.
According to him, failure to take corrective action would leave him with no option but to seek redress through the courts.
The development has reignited concerns over the growing challenge of misinformation and the need for strict adherence to ethical standards in journalism, particularly in the age of digital media where unverified content can spread rapidly and cause reputational harm.
Uduaghan reiterated his respect for the First Lady, describing her as his sister and urged media organisations to uphold the principles of accuracy, accountability and responsible reporting in the discharge of their duties.
